  6. Writer's Guidelines

  8. Introduction:  High Mesa Electronic Publishing was established in 1985
  9. as Computer Techniques.  Our very first publication in electronic
  10. format was C_Tech News a weekly newsletter.  In 1988, HMEP introduced
  11. the first electronic magazines available in IBM .EXE file format.
  12. This was followed by a full color magazine in 1989.  In 1988, HMEP
  13. published one of the first full length electronic novels.  This novel
  14. was made available as Shareware and distributed via world wide
  15. computer networks.  In 1989, another first was accomplished by HMEP.
  16. The introduction of a fully encrypted novel that was unreadable except
  17. by using HMEP READ.EXE.  While this did not guarantee security against
  18. the work being stolen, or given to others, it did make it difficult to
  19. simply copy the work from one format to another.
  20.  
  21. It is our point of view that authors are our mainstay.  Without
  22. authors we would have nothing to publish.  We vow to work with new
  23. unpublished authors, and to guarantee we will exceed royalties offered
  24. by any conventional publisher.  In many instances we will be prepared
  25. to offer authors in excess of 25% royalty from sales of their work.
  26. In addition if a particular work does not suit our needs, we will
  27. provide the names of possible electronic publishers who might be
  28. interested in the work.

  30. High Mesa Electronic Publishing is involved in the electronic
  31. publishing of NOVEL length material, articles, short stories, and
  32. other works that might fit our needs.
  33.  
  34. QUERIES:  It is preferable to have a query letter from new authors.
  35. This will allow us to determine if the work will fit our needs.  If
  36. you have an INTERNET account, your query letter may be submitted to
  37. (hmep@zialink.com) or (jake@zialink.com).  If you have access to any
  38. one of the thousands of FidoNet BBS's around the world, you may
  39. address your query to HMEP at one of the listed Fidonet addresses.  If
  40. your query is sent via one of these means you should receive a reply
  41. within a few days.  Queries should  contain:
  42.  
  43.         1.  A brief summary of the book, short story, or article.  It
  44.         is generally accepted that a couple of paragraphs will provide
  45.         this information.
  46.         2.  If the work is non-fiction, provide a detail of your
  47.         experience in the field or with the subject matter.
  48.         3.  A sample chapter, preferably the first chapter, in some
  49.         cases part of the first and last may provide the information
  50.         needed.
  51.         4.  An outline or synopsis of any complete manuscript.  A
  52.         detailed chapter by chapter is the style often provided.
  53.         5.  If you are previously published a listing of your credits.
  54.         However they are not necessary for your work to be considered.
  55.         6.  If you submit by US Mail, include a SASE (self addressed
  56.         stamped envelope).  If you use INTERNET or FidoNet the cost of
  57.         the SASE may be saved.
  58.  
  59. If you us US Mail, please allow at least three weeks for your query to
  60. be reviewed by the editor.
  61.  
  62. Package Review:  If your query fits into our editorial needs, you will
  63. receive notification via the most direct means.  You should be
  64. prepared to submit your package upon receipt.  
  65.  
  66. The WORK or Manuscript:  Once we receive your work, it will be
  67. extensively reviewed by the editorial staff to determine suitability
  68. for publication.
  69.  
  70. When your work or manuscript is accepted, you will be notified by the
  71. contract department.  This can be a lengthy process, or it can be
  72. nothing more than your simply signing the agreement.  When the
  73. agreement has been finalized and signed you will be provided with one
  74. (1) copy that is to be signed by you.  This copy MUST be returned to
  75. HMEP and once it is received it will be signed by the Publisher and a
  76. copy will be returned to you.

  78. PUBLISHED WORK:  It is true that some works will never be published.
  79. However, HMEP will work toward a goal that will eventually allow every
  80. writer to publish their work.  Once the work is published, if you are
  81. a NEW writer, you can say your career has begun.  If you are an
  82. established writer, you might say 'You have moved on to the next step
  83. of publishing.'

  92. Publishes electronic original and reprints.  Pays 10-30% on wholesale
  93. price.  Published and average of 1-2 months after acceptance.
  94. Simultaneous submissions OK.  Reports in two weeks on queries, 1-2
  95. months on manuscripts.

  97. FICTION:  Any genre accepted.  Specifically seeking Science Fiction,
  98. Romance, Adventure, Western or picture books.  Query or complete
  99. manuscript in electronic format accepted.
  100.  
  101. NON-FICTION:  Any genre accepted.  How to's, are accepted immediately.
  102.  
  103. SUBMISSIONS:  Manuscripts will be accepted in either electronic format
  104. or hard copy.  A small fee may be charged for scanning into electronic
  105. format.  Electronic submissions MUST be in ASCII.  If you have the
  106. need to support underling or italics, please use the standard
  107. _underline_, and *italics*.
  108.  
  109. SHORT STORY DISK:  Any genre, needs 15-20 short stories per issue.
  110. Publishes when disk requirements are met.  Pays a minimum of 1/2 cent
  111. per word, within 90 days of publication.
  112.  
  113. ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING NEWS:  Articles about electronic publishing,
  114. writers quidelines for electronic magazines, listing of electronic
  115. publishers, will consider news about other media publishing.  Pays a
  116. minimum of 1/2 cent per word, UPON ACCEPTANCE. Presently published the
  117. last month of each calendar quarter (Mar,June,Sept,Dec).  May go
  118. monthly in 1995.

  120. NOVEL-ON-DISK:  The very first Novels-on-Disk were published in 1988.
  121. HMEP will accept any genre for consideration, and will discuss
  122. electronic publishing with the author.  NOD's are normally published
  123. within 30 days of acceptance, and are made available via Mail Order
  124. Sales only.  Payment ranges from 10-30% of the wholesale price of the
  125. disk minus shipping/mailing cost.  The wholesale price is established
  126. by the price HMEP may sell the disk to distributors or customers.
  127. Individual disk sales will be at retail prices and authors may receive
  128. additional royalty based on these sales.

  130. HELPFUL HINTS:  You should spell check and grammar check your work
  131. prior to submitting it.  Manuscripts that have obviously not been
  132. proofed will be rejected without consideration.
